Abstract

The theme of this thesis is the development of technology in coffee production in São Paulo during the exceptional period of crop growth and exports of coffee between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Generally, the interest of economic historians in the subject of technical progress in agriculture has focused on the impact of technology on productivity. However, another important aspect of technology relates to agricultural techniques and mechanical processes used in growing, harvesting and processing coffee. The historiography that treats this last dimension of technical progress is relatively sparse, with important issues that still need to be investigated in detail. Our work investigates the technological development in coffee farming in São Paulo, with emphasis in Ribeirão Preto in the period 1875-1910. The period covered by the study will monitor the evolution of technology during the arrival and consolidation of coffee culture in Ribeirão Preto that experienced the transition from a largely rural economy to an urban economy. The years 1875-1910 also constitute a privileged period to study the diffusion of inventions and innovations in coffee agriculture between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. (AU)
