Collaborative practices with adolescents and health team professionals on sexual and reproductive health

Abstract

Based on social constructionist assumptions, reality is the result of jointly constructed descriptions, so we suggest that constructing and developing collaborative actions on sexual and reproductive health with adolescents and health professionals can have propositional effects on adolescence and sexuality. Understandings about risky sexual behaviors guide the development of some actions, therefore collaborative group practices bet on the ethical character of health actions. The present research had as general objective to understand the process of construction of an intervention developed collaboratively between the researcher, the team of professionals of a unit of the Family Health Strategy and the adolescents belonging to the territory. As specific objectives: a) describe the steps involved in building and developing a collaborative intervention with adolescents and health professionals, highlighting joint decision-making processes and involvement with the health team and b) understanding the challenges and potential of constructing a collaborative intervention. Its theoreticalmethodological design was action research, whose proposal is the active participation of those who research together with people. We use narrative research as a methodological resource for the process of construction of meanings, whose method involves the interpretation, understanding and writing about an experience. Thirteen adolescents participated, separated into two groups, and nine health professionals. As data production procedures, we use field notes records, and full audio transcripts of preparatory meetings and conversations. From the analysis of the material produced, we constructed narratives referring to two moments: 1) construction of the group process, 2) group meetings with adolescents and health professionals. About the first moment, the narratives discuss the contact with the field, named: a) \"Daily life\": getting to know the health unit; 2) \"Construction\": articulating networks and knowledge; 3) \"Waltz\": inviting teenagers; 4) \"Face to face\": interviewing teenagers; 5) \"Simply put\": cobuilding the intervention. As a group, we chose to talk about: 1) gender and sexuality; 2) puberty and sexually transmitted infections; 3) contraceptive and protective methods; 4) film: \"As Melhores Coisas do Mundo\" (\"The Best Things in the World\"); 5) being a father and mother in adolescence; 6) alcohol and other drugs and 7) choices and their repercussions. About the second moment of the analysis, we produced narratives about the development of the seven meetings, which have multivocality and reflexivity as characteristics. We conclude, based on the analysis, on the coconstruction of group intervention as an artisanal, slow and respectful process. Its most direct gains are trust and co-responsibility for the group process. Difficulties encountered in the group process were to make it possible to accept differences of opinion for decision making, as well as abandonments by the group, and limits of Collaborative Practices. Gains from its use can be listed: development of an action research, with a collaborative posture; coherence the principle of integrality; investment in communication with adolescents as a way to promote health in sexual practices.
