Abstract

This study examined persons residing in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The data were collected from a transversal inquiry carried out in 1991, 1998 e 2000. In this occasion, 2025 males and females, of 20 or more years of age were selected in a systematic way, according to there local of residence. The samples of Minas Gerais were selected in a stratified two stages cluster sampling. In each stratum (urban e rural) was selected a sample of residences from official lists. In the second stage, was selected one person in each residence. The sample of São Paulo (Cotia county) was selected in a proportional sampling. Clinical and anthropometric tests were performed to assess the following parameters: arterial blood pression, weight, height, waist and hip circurnferences. By individual interview, demographic and socio-economic factors, and aspects of life-style (smoking, sedentary activities, dietary patters and use of alcohol) were assessed. The main objective of this study was to compare the cardiovascular disease risk factors (arterial hypertension, overweight/obesity, smoking, sedentary activities, waist-hip ratio and alcoholism), aiming to detect differences between migrants from Minas Gerais to the capital city, São Paulo, and people in the place of origin - Teófilo Otoni, Novo Cruzeiro, and Salinas - and also with the people native of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR). In general, the people of place of origin and return migrants to Teófilo Otoni and Novo Cruzeiro and Salinas, and migrants from Minas Gerais, and the people native of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region were significantly differents in prevalence of arterial hypertension >=140/90 mmHg (p= 0,000000), arterial hypertension >=160/95 mmHg (p= 0,000023), overweight (p=0,000000), obesity (p=0,000000), waist-hip ratio (p= 0,000004), smoking (p=0,000014) alcoholism (p= 0,000001), and sedentary activity (p= 0,000000). In multiple logistic regression, the difference in prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors were explained by migration, adjusted for sex, age, socio-economic status, place of residence and interaction, if applicable. But the effects of migration and others covariates were explored by logistic regression concerning the differences in cardiovascular risk factors between migrants, and people in the place of origin. and native people of São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR), residing in Cotia county.
