Abstract

Having as its object of study the adaptation of The man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick for a homonymous on-demand series, this research aims to analyze how the narrative and themes present in the original literary work are transposed to the audiovisual series, in the context of the new habits of the serial audiovisual content market via streaming; this is a study on the interlace between a literary work with the audiovisual product based on it, within a new model of production, distribution and consumption. In order to carry out a scientific demand, the methodology of Depth Hermeneutics will be used, mainly, as proposed by sociologist John B. Thompson in Ideology and Modern Culture, addressing the context of Dick's book (the 1960s, Cold War, post-war, the science fiction literary genre and the dystopia subgenre) and of the series (the new media market and streaming platforms) and, as a consequence of this hermeneutic approach, the analytical path about the process of adapting Dick's book to the series. Subsequently, the new reality of audiovisual media in the emergence of streaming platforms will be discussed and how this fact changed the way of producing, distributing and consuming audiovisual content. Therefore, the research is characterized in the following fundamental question: In the new context of production, distribution and consumption for the audiovisual market, the series The man in the High Castle can be understood as an important example of a serial audiovisual product adapted, therefore, how the intertwining between the literary themes of the original work and the characteristics of audiovisual production in this new model provided by streaming platforms influenced the media adaptation suffered by the Philip K. Dick’s book? (AU)
