Sexual education in Brazil: survey and analysis of proposals for admission to sexual education in the last 20 years

Abstract

After the publication of the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN), in 1997, there was an expansion of the initiatives of insertion of work with Sex Education, linked to the development of projects and classes with pre-established themes, however, without consolidating yet, a policy training that subsidizes and guides the performance of this theme at school. If, on the one hand, there are references on the need for knowledge and on the construction of sexual education knowledge, on the other hand, there is a lack of scientific literature on what are the essential themes to be worked on in the Sex Education intervention proposals. This research aimed to carry out a survey and analysis of official documents that guided the proposals for intervention in Sexual Education in Brazil in the last 20 years. At first, what was proposed in the documents found was analyzed, emphasizing its origin, perspectives and themes. In the second moment, the menu, objectives, themes, target audience and conditions for the implementation of the intervention proposals were described and analyzed, possibilities for the existence of official documents. The research provided elements that allowed us to conclude that, despite the setbacks verified in the official documents in the last 20 years, the intervention proposals still contain pertinent and important themes related to the work with Sex Education, and still relate it with the educational practice and the school context. On the themes most addressed in the proposals, the following stand out: Sex Education, historical perspective, gender, discrimination and prejudice, teacher and sexual education, as well as diversity. These themes lead us to indicate the potential for contribution in the training of teachers and students; promoting discussions, problematizing sexual education; and for the reorganization of the curriculum, making it possible to increasingly include Sex Education.
