Abstract

There are many factors that determine the establishment and population growth of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti in Brazil. However, there is still no understanding of what they are and how these determinants operate in different regions of the country, as well as their impact on dengue epidemiology. It is known that the increase of temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity enable environments conducive to proliferation of mosquito vectors such as Ae. aegypti, but not exactly how to behave regionally. The current existing programs in the country for the epidemiological control are mainly based on the elimination of breeding sites, but the study of different factors involved in transmission is necessary since the dynamics of the disease includes virus, the mosquito vector and humans. Thus, this work had three different objectives: 1) the study of time series applied to dengue epidemiology, 2) the use of entomological and meteorological data to describe the likelihood and outbreaks size in different regions of Brazil and 3) a depth study on the perception and knowledge of the population of Rio Claro, São Paulo state, about the vector characteristics and disease. Thus, we sought to better understand the behavior and the determinants of Ae. aegypti growth in different locations in Brazil, and how this dynamic would imply on dengue epidemiology in Brazil. The results of this study show that high-density of the vector is not always related to the highest amount of cases. For many Brazilian cities, rainfall of the previous month proved to be the main determinant in the number of dengue cases, however, the study of other factors is necessary, such as the introduction of new serotypes and imported cases.
