Editing as semiotic practice: a study of the editorial identity Hilda Hilst in Da poesia

Abstract

This study is based on the work of Jacques Fontanille about the levels of relevance of semiotic analysis, especially those that allow us to reflect about the Semiotics of Culture on a linguistic and cultural basis, interested not only in the analysis of the meaning produced by texts and discourses, but also by the problems of signification that emerge from their circulation. Thus, in dialogue with Gérard Genette’s work regarding the notion of paratext, we analyze the editorial procedures (the semiotic practice of editing) of the work “Da poesia”, a volume of complete poems by the Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst. By advancing on themes such as support, practice, editing and (re)valorization of the literary work in a linguistic-discursive perspective, the work establishes itself as an experience of a Fontanillian-inspired semiotics of circulation. Its main objective is to demonstrate how the practice of editing acts in the construction of what we call “Hilda Hilst’s editorial identity”, which is not to be confused either with an authorial identity (global identity, which runs through the work) or with the enunciative identity of the poems (local identity, homologous to the dimension of the lyric self). According to our hypothesis, the construction of this editorial identity occurs through a strategy marked by two other semiotic practices, which appear in the work underlying the editing practice: the critical practice, which attests to the literary, aesthetic, and social value of the work, and the marketing practice, which attests to its value of consumption and selling. In this scenario, the editing practice, when guided by a critical-literary axiology, would attenuate the values considered controversial, seeking to respond to a demand for (re)valuing Hilst’s work and erasing her “biography”. But when oriented towards market values, it would intensify those same polemical aspects, aiming at a more effective marketing, considering the “polemical personality” a positive factor for sales. From the results obtained, the work demonstrates that the practice of editing is a semiotic phenomenon capable of guiding, in a given culture, the consecration procedures of a literary text, since it determines the modalities of circulation of a work. In the case of “Da poesia”, specific discourses about the author (Hilst), amplified by the editorial gesture, act as the basis for the construction of a “narrative of life” that serves the objectives of a Publisher. We also see how other editing resources (editor’s notes, photographs, etc.) operate, precisely, in the attenuation or amplification of these (polemical) discourses that the editing practice resumes. Thus, considering that several axiologies are mobilized within a given volume (such as the literary-artistic, the critical, the advertising), we conclude that the “value of the work” does not depend only on its value as a literary text, but also on its appropriation and reproduction by other sociocultural instances — questioning the supposed autonomy that has historically been attributed to the literary text.
