Abstract

Given the reduction of homicides in Brazil in the last decade, especially in São Paulo, deaths from traffic accidents have been gaining importance among external causes. With the implementation of the Brazilian Traffic Code, which entered into force in 1998, there was a significant decrease of deaths, but accidents are still a major concern to the Government. The overall objective of this study is to contribute to knowledge about patterns and trends of recent traffic accidents in Campinas, verifying that in addition to age and sex, the sociodemographic characteristics related to render certain vulnerable population groups facing the risk was injured or die in traffic accidents. The paper presents an analysis of recent trends in mortality from traffic accidents in the metropolitan area of Campinas in the period 1996-2006, verifying the profile by age, sex and type of vehicle that the victims occupied. From 4171 records in official reports of accidents in Campinas, is made further analysis on characteristics of victims and events, fatal and nonfatal considering the location of occurrence of accidents and residence of the persons involved and local occurrence which is used as a proxy of socioeconomic conditions. Analyses at the aggregate level on the distribution and concentration in intra-urban space, contrasted with indicators of social vulnerability and intensity of daily shifts for the areas, show that the social vulnerability may increase the risk of accidents for specific population groups (AU)
