Abstract

The urbanization process in Brazil was quickly after 1960s, this fact turn the urban environment quality worse as life of citizens, besides housing déficit. The Companhia de Desenvolvimento Habitacional e Urbano (CDHU) was made by State Government of São Paulo to relieve this housing deficit. However, the company's developments prioritized mass construction over quality, often ignoring the climatic and environmental characteristics of the sites and standardizing the construction pattern, favoring high density construction, with small lots and total or partial soil sealing. From the theoretical-methodological proposal by Monteiro (1976), the Urban Climate System (SCU), aimed to investigate the generation of heat islands in Martinópolis/SP and to verify how thermal comfort manifests itself in housing developments built by CDHU in town. The research used techniques already consolidated in the investigation of heat islands and thermal comfort, such as records of air temperature and humidity at fixed points, mobile transects, thermal images from the LandSat 8 satellite and THI index by Thom (1959). The results indicated that the external thermal comfort index of the houses is directly related to the heat islands, especially in afternoon when there is naturally more heating, while the internal thermal comfort index was more associated with the atmospheric systems running.
