Abstract

Information about the adverse effects of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in human health has great importance, both scientifically and socially. Their high carcinogen potential, especially regarding lung cancer, and in some cases, skin and bladder cancer, is shown in several epidemiological surveys. Such surveys, and the fact that the PAHs may be found in several work environment; affecting directly several exposed workers, show the relevance of the current paper. It is still necessary to consider that the early detection of an exposure constitutes, at the light of the current knowledge, an important factor in the prevention of occupational chemical risks. Due to this fact, the conduction of an environmental assessment by means of the pyrene and the biological evaluation by means of the urinary 1-hidroxipyrene, the main product of pyrene biotransformation. Such assessments grant to doctor, specially to Occupational and Industry doctor, and to the scientific community as a whole, an alternative of a new biomarker, the urinary 1 hidroxipyrene, already acclaimed by the ACGIH (2003), that may be regulated by the competent agencies and enclosing the Programa de Controle Médico de Saúde Ocupacional (PCMSO) of the NR-7 to be used in several companies around the country.
