Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze Turma da Monica’s comic books, by Mauricio de Sousa, in order to observe the manner in which they respond to social and educational discourses present in society. Considering the fact that the comic books in question have been published continuously in Brazil since the year of 1970, added to the realization that Brazilian society has been through innumerous social, economic and political changes since then, this work aims to understand which forces – both centrifugal and centripetal – exert influence over the social values materialized into the artistical work of the cartoonist during those fifty years. Adopting discourse studies of Bakhtin and the Circle to ponder this question, this thesis approach discourse from a perspective that is anchored in social interaction, where the ideological sign, saturated with meaning, reflects and refracts reality. As central concepts and ideas, it discusses the ideological sign, the discourse genres, active-responsive comprehension, the ethical and esthetical act and the relation between Life and Art. Through Dialogical Discourse Analysis, operated by the collation between itinerances, the present work retrieves the context of the comic books publication, allowing the relations between the corpus and other discourses to emerge. The specific goals of this research are 1) to explore the exact manner in which the changes are observed in the corpus and to identify the main themes that are privileged in this movement of modernization of the comic books, and 2) to investigate how comics are related to children’s literature, including the influences this relation could bring upon the corpus. In order to do so, a study about children’s literature was accomplished, comprising its history and intimate relationship with school, as well as a review of the beginnings and development of the comic books’ market in Brazil. Additionally, a brief history of the cartoonist and manager Mauricio de Sousa was traced in order to better understand where his characters fit in the context of the aforementioned studies. The dialogical analysis of the corpus pointed to changes in three main thematic-axis: the role of men and women in society, the representation of fat bodies as an ideological sign, and issues related to representativeness and social inclusion. The collation of the comic books published in different decades amongst themselves and with other relevant discourses has revealed that, as determined social values begin to occupy a prominent place in society in detriment of others, the corpus responds to them in three main ways: by completely banning some themes, by slightly modifying others, and by creating new characters to materialize new social values.
