Abstract

Drawing on a Foucauldian Theoretical framework, the aim of this study was to analyze how the power relations between the main agents (coaches, gymnasts and parents) involved in a training gym of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) emerge in coaching. This research was designed as a case study within a high performance training gym in Brazil. 4 coaches, 15 gymnasts and 12 parents participated in this research. Data were produced from participant observation and semi-structured interviews. And, to analyze the data we used the Reflective Thematic Analysis method (BRAUN; CLARKE, 2006; 2012; 2019; 2020). From this analysis we found four themes, which will be presented and discussed in interdependent articles. In Article 1, we present the theme "The reproduction of coaching practices in the socialization of coaches", in which we explore how the discourse, power relations and coaching practices that take place in the context of WAG in Brazil emerges and are reproduced in the socialization of coaches. In the second article, we present the theme "How disciplinary power operates within the gym: actions, reactions and consequences for coaching", in which we explore the coach-gymnast power relationship, from both gymnasts’ and coaches’ perspectives. In Article 3, we present the theme "How power operates around the gym: the perspectives and the role of parents", in which we analyze the interconnections of socialization between "gymnastics parents", the coach-parent power relationship and the parent-gymnast power relationship. In the fourth article, we present the theme "Towards more effective and less coercive coaching practices", in which we explore the active role of coaches in problematizing the dominant discourses and practices that circulate within and around WAG coaching environment. We believe that this construction was essential to argue the thesis, which defends the compression of coaching in WAG as a process structured by a specific sociocultural context, in which a complex dynamic of power relations emerges between the agents within this scenario. In other words, we consider that the challenges to ensure the balance of performance, health and the welfare of the gymnasts depend of a joint endeavor of the main agents, which circulate in WAG coaching practice (AU)
