Abstract

This thesis analyzes the intellectual sociability of the city of Recife during the years 1946-1964, and the perception of underdevelopment as a social and cultural experience. The axis of this approach is the reflections on the economic and social underdevelopment of the Northeast undertaken by a certain intellectual elite. The thesis is based on a large corpus of documents produced by the main institutions that carried out debates and projects in an attempt to understand and address the issues concerning the underdevelopment of the Northeast, namely: Joaquim Nabuco Institute for Social Research; University of Recife; Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast; besides the extensive documentation of the Popular Culture Movement of Recife. Based on this corpus, the thesis examines the intersection of Recife\'s intellectual networks, agents, and institutions that shaped the city\'s cultural scene in the mid-twentieth century as a particular urban experience marked by the so-called \"spectacle of poverty\". This perspective challenged us to answer the following questions: is it possible to speak of a collective profile of these intellectuals in Recife in this period? Did the urban experience of that intellectual elite, together with the local socioeconomic aspects, contribute to a peculiar perception of poverty that led to a reflection on underdevelopment? Could the cultural production of those intellectual groups be understood as a kind of counter-elite? The writing of this history was guided by a theoretical approach that associated the triad history of intellectual elites, intellectual history, and history of cities. (AU)
