Abstract

This masters thesis represents the developments and deepening of questions that emerged from the research trajectory, from studies conducted during the Scientific Initiation program to the international internship in Seville, Spain. The results of these stages highlighted the effects of urban intervention mechanisms in contemporary cities, contributing to the growth of business spaces at the expense of authentic public spaces. The transformation of the urban landscape, influenced by the constructive incentives of CEPACs, especially in areas like Brooklin, reflected the intensification of verticalization. In the binational project Highrise Living and the Inclusive City, I engaged in relevant discussions regarding verticalization and the construction of more inclusive cities. This experience, particularly concerning the methodological procedures developed for selecting analytical segments, revealed developments in projects proposing new housing typologies and ways of living, which, in turn, have implications for urban spatialities and public spaces. Consequently, this masters research was grounded in the investigation of changes in public space and its socio-spatial practices resulting from the developments in the verticalization processes, especially in vertical condominiums that propose new housing typologies. The research was developed through a theoretical-empirical approach, which involved a theoretical-conceptual foundation encompassing various discussions related to public space. Furthermore, it included the refinement of a methodology to approach the study objects, and fieldwork was conducted based on contributions from urban ethnography. Observations of daily practices, presences, and social interactions in the analyzed locations were carried out, and interviews were conducted with the social actors actively participating in these spaces. The results were analyzed by combining theoretical discussions with the emerging questions from fieldwork, explored through post-representational cartographies. However, the purpose of this study was not to provide conclusions, but rather considerations and reflections that introduce and bring forth elements for discussion. In this context, some questions emerged, especially concerning transformations and memories constructed from the narratives of the participants, which suggest changes in socio-spatial practices in these public spaces in recent years.
