This masters dissertation treats the growth and consolidation of total institutions - principally penal establishments - in Brazil and in other countries. lt examines economic and social questions tied to total institutions of incarceration. Such institutions are dedicated to punishment and surveillance. This master\'s dissertation treats the insertion of these structures into the city, into the city\'s daily organization and into the organization of its internai space. lt presents debates about penal institutions, which took place in Europe and the United States from the 18th century onward, and their repercussions in Brazil. From a general analysis of penal institutions, which emerged as a ways replacing corporal punishment in public squares with the privation of liberty, this work focuses on three models of penal institutions built in the city of Ribeirão Preto in the second half of the twentieth century: Febem, the Public Prison of Vila Branca and the Penal Complex (Public Prison 11 and Penitentiary of Maximum Security) (AU) | |
