Abstract

This study aims to investigate aspects of the development of urbanistic thinking, interlacing interpretations on urban forms, architectural languages and political projects spread out from the beginning of the 20th century. Diffused at the same time as the disciplinary realm of urbanism and urban studies is configured in / from the international debate, these interpretations set the definition of the place of the American continent in the narratives of Western history, and guide evaluations and projections about its urban condition. The study presupposition and central hypothesis is the understanding of the inescapable role of the debate for the very affirmation of this disciplinary field, which is not restricted to national borders and goes beyond the notion of circulation of ideas. In order to explore different dimensions interrelated in the study of the theme, the project is organized in three parts: part 1: Technical culture: urbanistic thinking and politics in the technical journals of architecture and engineering; part 2: Political languages: urban forms and architectural persuasion; part 3: Cosmopolitanisms: technical-erudite knowledge and urban life. In the current stage of the project, only the first part is focused, investigating the formation of urbanistic thinking in the American continent from the debate and diffusion of themes related to urbanism in technical journals. The institutional spaces of professional education and diffusion of urbanistic thinking, such as meetings / congresses and technical journals of Architecture and Urbanism, are taken from institutions existing in Brazil in the first decades of the 20th century, as axes for the research and the links to explore the dynamics involved.
