Abstract

The present work studied the resistance to the abrasive wear of different metallic alloys, using the methodology developed by FRED C. BOND (1964) for the determination of the abrasion index (A.i.). It was found that there is a clear influence in the results of the abrasiveness in function of the metallic material applied, standing out the high chromium white cast irons, whose A.i.s was always below of the other alloys, and therefore, they are more resistant to the wear than the steels in the same operation conditions. It was demonstrated in this work that, being compared the real data with the results of the laboratory tests through the application of the equations of BOND, the wear values in g/kWh of the white cast iron were closer of the field results than the one of the other alloys. The obtaining of abrasiveness values with pads of similar materials those applied in the practice allow to estimate with larger precision the wear in industrial operations than with pads of standard steel of BOND. Concluding, it pointed out the validity of the equations determined by BOND, because the results with materials of same families of those used in field were shown very close one of each other, doing with that it is possible to develop analysis of prediction of useful life of wear components with good success margin, still depending on increasing the variable to represent the tribological system that, being extremely complex, it can be represented partly by the alloy type ormaterial that it is being submitted to the waste, what it reinforces the conclusion that the durability or useful life of the piece can be better determined if the tests be made with similar alloys or of same family that the ones that indeed will be used in the practice.
