Abstract

Dental alloys have been increasingly replaced by ceramics because of aesthetics and improved physical and mechanical properties that have afforded the construction of restorations without metal, known as metal-free. However, a difficulty to be overcome in ceramic systems is the abrasion. Studies demonstrate that feldspathic porcelains are more abrasive than pressable ceramics. Nevertheless, there are studies relating that low-fusing ceramics and conventional feldspathic porcelains wear equally dental enamel. Enamel is the ideal antagonist, but restorative materials replace enamel because of caries, periodontal disease or trauma. Among the available restorative materials, there are composites, alloys and ceramics. Several studies evaluated wear resistance of the materials using ceramics, composites and gold alloys as antagonists, but there are lack of studies that correlate wear of pressable ceramics opposed to dental alloys commonly used in the oral cavity of the patients, such as nickel-chromium, cobalt-chromium and pure titanium. Thus, the aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate wear resistance and microhardness of a pressable low-fusing ceramic opposing to different restorative materials: commercially pure titanium (cp Ti), nickel-chromium alloy (Ni-Cr) and cobalt-chromium alloy (Co-Cr).
