Abstract

This research proposal analyzed the actions of intellectuals Jorge Amado (1912-2001) and Edison Carneiro (1912-1972), and, secondarily, that of Aydano do Couto Ferraz (1914-1985) through the partnership he established with the two first, around the debates on race, especially the black and indigenous issue, and class promoted by the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB) in dialogue with the international communist movement, represented by Comintern, between the 1920s and 1930s. We chose Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, as the locus of investigation because it is the area of interest of the scientific and literary productions of the researched subjects. The importance of the state is evident from its prominence in the reflections of foreign and Brazilian researchers, notably those involved with the renewal of social sciences in this decade. To understand the circulation of ideas about these debates, we mapped the sociability networks they created and participated in, such as congresses, religious, cultural and literary associations, as well as newspapers editorial offices. The cooperation established between intellectuals of the period, especially in the 1st and 2nd Afro-Brazilian Congress, helped to expand and strengthen the PCB\'s agenda of struggle in behalf of the Brazilian proletariat interests. Initial reflections led us to the understanding that Bahian communists were responsible for fueling the racial agenda in the party at the first half of the 20th century, with the aim of combating racism and religious intolerance and expanding the representation of communists among black workers. To reinforce our initial reflections, we used various sources, such as printed matter and letters exchanged between the researched subjects and important intellectuals of the period, such as Arthur Ramos (1903-1949). We also performed a careful selection of biographies and autobiographies about the political-intellectual activities of Bahian activists (AU)
