Abstract

Benchmarking is a process through which the organization identifies the best practices of a selected object of study, and makes improvements necessaries to reach them. The identification of the object of study is an important stage to prevent that resources be placed towards projects that little or no competitive advantage bring to the organization. This project presents a systematization of the benchmarking object of study identification stage that considers the importance of the competitive dimensions to the customers, its performance with relation to the competitors, and the alignment between the benchmarking projects and the strategical priorities of organizational performance improvement. The proposal is detailed with the presentation of some tools that can be useful during the benchmarking process planning stage. After the presentation of the systematics, two cases of application are presented and discussed. Although the limitations and difficulties in applying the proposal, the managers of the companies had shown themselves pleased with the presented results, and certain that if benchmarking projects were implemented from the identified objects of study, they would bring considerable competitive advantage for the organization.
