Abstract

Physical inactivity and associated chronic diseases have demonstrated high prevalence nowadays. Regular physical activity is one important way to prevention and control of several chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of global and leisure-time physical activity, among people 18 to 59 years of age, residing in areas of the state of São Paulo (Brazil), according to the variables: demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, health-related behaviors, weight satisfaction, and presence of morbidities. Also, walking was analyzed according to these variables. Data analyzed was based on the "Inquérito Multicêntrico de saúde ISA", a population-based cross-sectional study, with a stratified sample of clusters performed in multiple stages. Physical inactivity was determined using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and by a question on the regular practice of leisure time physical activity. Data analysis took the sample design into account. This study showed gender differences in the prevalence of physical activity and social inequalities especially related to the schooling and age. Beyond these factors, the physical inactivity domain should be taken into account in the planning of public policies and interventions for promoting physical activity, with special focus on the sub-groups more vulnerable to Physical inactivity.
