Abstract

This research aims to examine empirically, through the production function of knowledge, the relationship between the spatial distribution of innovative inputs and outcomes of innovation in the regions of the state of São Paulo. The main assumption is that the innovative results are linked to the quantity and quality of innovative inputs and characteristics of the regions that are configured as an input. In this regard, stresses the importance of positive externalities generated by the spatial concentration of institutions able to contribute to the efforts of innovative companies. Among the most important externalities, the literature highlights the role of knowledge spillovers, since they are able to provide important benefits that foster innovation. Furthermore, emphasize the role of local production structures, specialized and diverse, and the density of interactions between the agents involved in the innovation process. The results of this study point to the importance of knowledge spillovers, urban agglomerations, and the density of interactions between universities and companies in promoting innovation in the São Paulo microregions (AU)
