Abstract

The work presents an interpretation of the Hipocratic-Galenic tradition in Latin-America using as main supports the natural histories of Francisco Hernández, Juan de Cárdenas, Bernabé Cobo, among others. We take the categories of Indians and Spaniards to search on dietary beliefs and politics in New Spain and Peru at sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Peoples and American nature representations legitimize, change and refuse local practices using criterions such as temperance and medicinal values of foods. (AU)
