Abstract | |
This thesis analyses rural architecture related to the cattle faming, in the XIX century, in the hinterland (sertão) that spreads over the northern area of the modern states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Bahia. In comparative perspective, investigates main houses bringing forward it´s similarities and the particular features of the project design, in an attempt to unveil the vernacular logic and relate these subjects to available materials, construction techniques and methods. This work demystifies the idea of an uniform northeastern region, regarding landscape and material culture and sets a new way to study rural architecture, in a global way and with systemic perspective, verifying the regional interfaces across and beyond the area of the current involved states.
