Abstract

The object of the present invention is to provide a method for the protection of enzymatic biocatalysts consisting of a primary support surrounded by a secondary matrix. More specifically, the present invention is embodied by a bioreactor having a configuration that maintains the physical integrity and catalytic activity of the biocatalyst after long-term operation, while allowing the protected biocatalyst to be easily separated from the solid during the reaction precipitation. More specifically, the present invention relates to the use of said bioreactor for the enzymatic synthesis of β-lactam antibiotics, comprising an insoluble enzymatic catalyst with a primary matrix for immobilization surrounded by a secondary matrix, It is capable of maintaining 100% catalytic physical integrity and approximately 100% catalytic activity.
