Marta Rodriguez de Assis Machado graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo (1999) and obtained her Master (2003) and Ph.D. (2007) in Philosophy and Theory of Law at the same university. She joined São Paulo Law School of Getulio Vargas Foundation as full-time Professor of Law in 2007 and coordinator of the graduate program since 2019. She was formerly, since 2004, a full-time researcher at the same institution. She teaches courses on Criminal Law, Criminology and Sociology of Law, as well as seminars in the Master Program on Law and Development. While in the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) she is a member of the Nucleus on Political Institutions and Social Movements and coordinates empirical research on Racism and Gender in the Law since 2007. She is the coordinator of the Nucleus of Crime and Penalty at the Law School of Getulio Vargas Foundation, Global Fellow in the Center on Law and Social Transformation (CMI/Bergen University), researcher at the Oxford Human Rights Hub, Fellow at the International Reproductive and Sexual Health Law Program/Toronto University and main researcher of Maria Sibylla Merian International Center for Latin America Conviviality in Unequal Societies - MECILA. She was visiting scholar at the Center for Latin-American Studies of UC Berkeley (October 2011-February 2012), the Latin-American Institute Freie Universität Berlin, Germany (November, 2009-February 2010; July, 2012); the Max-Planck-Institute für ausländisches und internationals Strafrecht, Freiburg i. Br., Germany (August, 2006 - February, 2007; July 2007; November, 2008 - January, 2009) and at the Department of Philosophy of Law of the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain (March-July, 2006). In addition, she is part of the Network of Latin American Professors in Law and Gender (RedAlas). She has recently worked in research projects financed by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice: Equal rights between men and women (2008-2009, as researcher); Corporate Criminal Liability in Brazil (2008-2009, as coordinator); Alternatives to punishment (2007-2008, as coordinator); Reform of economic crime legislation (2006-2008, as researcher). Her current research on Criminal Law, Legal Theory and Sociology of Law, with focus on theory and punishment, the increase of criminalization and penalization and the relations between the Brazilian black and gender movements and the Law.
