Full Professor of Virology at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMRP-USP). Physician, graduated from Federal University of Ceará - UFC (1981); Resident in Internal Medicine (UFC/1982-1983); and later in Clinical Pathology (University of Virginia/1996). Master's degree from Federal UNiversity of Sao Paulo - UNIFESP (1987); and PhD also from UNIFESP with Thesis developed at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine (1991). Was a postdoctoral reaesrch fellow in Virology at the University of Virginia (1992-1993). Joined the faculty at UVA as Research Assistant Professor of Virology (1993-1996). Runs the Viral Pathogenesis Laboratory in the Virology Research Center, at FMRP-USP. He is Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology since 2014; was president of the Brazilian Society for Virology (2013-2014); Chairman, Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology at FMRP-USP (2020-2022); and President of the FMRP-USP Research Committee (2016-2020). He is advisor in the Postgraduate Programs in Cellular and Molecular Biology; and Otorhinolaryngology, both at FMRP-USP. He does research on pathogenesis and persistence of human respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, Oropouche virus, and vertical transmission of viruses. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
