Graduated in Biological Science, Area Biomedicine at Universidade Estadual de Londrina (1980), master's degree in Molecular Biology (1984) and Doctorate /PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) (1988), post-doctoral training at Tufts University (1989-1990), Boston, MA, under supervision of Dr Charles Dinarello, and Stanford University (1991-1992), Stanford, CA, USA, under supervision of Dr Steven Sherwood. Has experience in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and Immunology. He is co-discover the Dermcidin, an antibiotic peptide, with multiple biological functions, which is produced by eccrine glands and relased in the sweat and other biological fluids. His work is focused on the role of dermcidin as oncogene for skin cancer and breast cancer through its modulation of cell death pathways (apoptosis and necrosis), antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammation activity and immune-modulating properties on the innate and adaptive responses. He is a professor at the multicenter postgraduate program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) at the University of São Paulo.
