Born in Balneário Camboriú/SC, he has a degree in Chemistry (UFSC/1988), a PhD in Chemical Sciences (UNICAMP/1993) and a Post-Doctorate (Harvard University-EUA/1994-1995). He is a Full Professor at IQ/Unicamp where he has worked since 06/1992; and Researcher 1A at CNPq. Works in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. His group completed the total synthesis of structurally complex bioactive molecules. Collaborates with MMV (www.mmv.org) and DNDi (www.dndi.org) developing preclinical candidates for the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases. He has 127 publications, 1 book, 2 book chapters and 2 patents (one granted by INPI); gave 357 conferences (country and abroad), including opening conferences of scientific events; has 698 appearances in columns and texts for newspapers and interviews for TV/Radio/Newspapers/Magazines. He is the author of the book "THERE IS NO SAFE WORLD WITHOUT SCIENCE - A scientist's fight against pseudosciences". It has seven publications highlighted as COVER of the magazines: RSC Med. Chem. (2020), J. Chem. Model Info. (2020), J. Med. Chem. (2014), Eur. J. Org. Chem. (2009), Quim. Nova (2009), Chem. Soc. Rev. (2008) and Synthesis (2003), a publication as a VIP article in Chemistry - A European Journal (2011) and two publications featured on the ACS website, celebrating Organic Chemistry in France and Latin America. He supervised 28 masters students, 20 Doctoral students, 34 Scientific Initiation students and supervised 38 post-doctorates. He was General Secretary of the 8th BMOS (1996-1998). At SBQ, he was General Secretary for two terms (2000-2004), President of the Organizing Committee of four annual meetings, Editor of the Electronic Bulletin (2000-2006), Member of the Advisory Board (2006-2008) and Editor of the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (2005-2013). He was a member of the CNPq Chemistry Board (2007-2010), member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Chem. Soc. Rev., Org. Biomol. Chem. (RSC) and Chem. Eng. News (ACS), Deputy Coordinator (2008-2011) and Coordinator of the Chemistry Area at CAPES (2011-2014), columnist for Jornal da Unicamp and Member of the Unicamp Task Force in the fight against COVID-19. He is a member of the INCT-INOFAR Management Committee and the Scientific Committee of the SoU_Ciência Movement. He received awards and honors, highlighting: in 1999, Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (JBCS) Medal; in 2009, Zeferino Vaz Academic Recognition Award (Unicamp); in 2013, CAPES Prize for Theses in the Chemistry Area; in 2014, Walter Borzani Award (CRQ IV Region); in 2014, the Santander Universities Science and Innovation Award in the Health Area; in 2015, Simão Mathias Medal (SBQ); in 2015 he was honored in the "175 Faces of Chemistry" initiative (http://www.rsc.org/diversity/175-faces/) in the 175th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2016, he received the "DNDi América Latina Partnership of the Year" recognition award from the LOLA Consortium; in 2021, the Oswaldo Luiz Alves Award (SBQ), for highlighting the defense of science, diffusion and dissemination of scientific knowledge for the benefit of Brazilian society; in 2022, the ADunicamp Recognition Award Mohamed Habib, in the Defense of life, physical and mental health category; tribute from Rádio Antena 8 FM of Caraguatatuba for the partnership in combating fake news in the pandemic and the ProEC Award for University Extension - Pro-Rectory of Extension and Culture Unicamp. In 2024, he received the title of Meritorious Citizen from the Municipal Council of Balneário Camboriú/SC. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP, 2008), Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Presidency of the Republic, 2010), full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC, 2011), Fellow of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry - IUPAC (2014) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2014).
