Almir Côrtes Barreto

Musician (mandolin and guitar) and scholar specializing in Brazilian instrumental music. He holds a B.A. in classical guitar from the Federal University of Bahia-UFBA, and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in popular music performance from the University of Campinas-UNICAMP. Mr. Côrtes was a visiting artist/scholar at the Jazz Studies Department at Indiana University and at the San Francisco State University. He he is releasing his fifth CD, the album TRANÇADO a partnership with the californian musician Harvey Wainapel (saxophones and clarinet). Acts mainly on the following subjects: Brazilian Jazz, choro (música), interpretação (música), violão, improvisação and bandolim. Currently, he is a professor at the University of Rio de Janeiros Villa-Lobos Institute, after several years collaborating at Unicamp (University of Campinas), one of Latin Americas most prestigious universities.
