Birthplace: Brazil

He obtained his Bachelors degree in Physics from the University of São Paulo (1989), followed by a Masters degree (1992) and a PhD in applied physics (1995), also from the University of São Paulo. He completed postdoctoral training at the University of Melbourne (2001) and at the University of Queensland (2004), both in Australia. Since 2010, he has been a Full Professor of Biophysics at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Institute of Biosciences, Botucatu/SP, where he is responsible for the Molecular Biophysics Laboratory. He has experience in the field of Molecular Biophysics, including protein crystallography, bioinformatics, calorimetry, and other biophysical techniques. His main research interests include animal toxins, nuclear import proteins, DNA repair proteins, and other proteins of biotechnological importance. He served as a part-time Senior Visiting Researcher at IEAMar/UNESP (Institute for Advanced Studies of the Sea), São Vicente/SP (20232026), and at Fiocruz-Rondônia (20192022). He was coordinator of the undergraduate Applied and General Biology program and served three terms as Head of the Department of Physics and Biophysics. He was responsible for establishing the third laboratory in South America capable of performing protein crystallography techniques and participated, during his PhD, in the project that solved the first protein structure by crystallography in South America (1995). He has supervised 36 MSc and PhD students and more than 60 undergraduate diploma theses, and has coordinated more than 20 research projects funded by FAPESP, CNPq, and FINEP (Brazilian governmental research agencies).Currently, he is an Editor of Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio), a reviewer for more than 20 scientific journals, and has delivered oral presentations at several international conferences.
