Helder Garmes is graduated in Linguistics and Literature from the State University of Campinas (1983, 1985), he has a master's degree in Theory and Literary History from the same university (1993) and a PhD in Comparative Studies of Literatures in Portuguese from the University of São Paulo (1999). He have completed postdoctoral internships at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2005), the College of Humanities at Ohio State University (2009, CNPq) and the University of Leeds (2016) the Universidade do Porto (2023), all of them sponsored by CAPES scholarship. He is currently a full professor at the University of São Paulo, working especially in the areas of Portuguese literature, comparative studies and history of literature. He coordinates two research groups: one focused on the work of Eça de Queirós; another focused on literature in Portuguese from Goa and other former Portuguese colonies in Asia. Since 2003, alongside Daiane Cristina Pereira, he has coordinated the Eça Group, registered with the CNPq. From 2015 to 2020, he coordinated the project Thinking Goa: A Peculiar Library in Portuguese, financed by FAPESP, which gave rise to the Thinking Goa Study Group. He is a member of the International Group for Studies of Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire (IGSCP-PE) based at CHAM-Center de Humanidades of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is the author of the book Romantismo Paulista (2006), organizer of the volume Oriente, Engenho e Arte (2004), co-organizer of Literatura Portuguesa: História, Memória e Perspectivas (2007), of three special issues of the journal Via Atlântica (2011, 2016 and 2019) on literature and culture in Goa, among several other articles, book chapters and book and dossier organizations.
