Abstract

Abstract The mortgages of the municipal notary´s offices of the Southwest of Minas Gerais are analyzed, from 1890 to 1914, the assets and values traded the financing conditions (interest and terms) and the profile of creditors and debtors (residence and occupation). Mortgage credit caused the growth of economic activities, mainly of coffee. The creditors lived mainly in the Southwest region, with remainder living more in the State of São Paulo than in other areas of Minas Gerais and even Rio de Janeiro. Compared to other coffee counties, there was a lower employment of mortgages and also lower traded values, despite higher coffee production in the Southwest of Minas Gerais. (AU)
