Abstract

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) at low analyte concentrations presents strong intensity fluctuations. In this investigation, such fluctuations were analyzed with multivariate curve resolution by alternating least squares (MCR-ALS). The signal decomposition provided by this multivariate statistical analysis permits a characterization of the populations of hot spots (HSs) in the sample from the point of view of localized surface plasmon resonance conditions. The SERS intensity distributions for each population showed characteristic Pareto-like shapes, associated with the local field enhancement distribution around HSs. This analysis leads to a more in-depth microscopic investigation of SERS substrates by providing a characterization of the near-field properties of HSs. (AU)
