Abstract

Wall-resolved large-eddy simulations are employed to investigate supersonic turbulent channel flows with isothermal walls. The present numerical simulations are performed using a highorder compact finite difference scheme with artificial fluid diffusivities. The flow conditions analyzed consider friction Reynolds numbers Re-tau approximate to 215, 285 and 970 and Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1 .7. Scaling effects are analyzed in terms of mean flow quantities and an investigation in terms of eddy advection velocities is presented for different streamwise wavelengths. We also examine Taylor's frozen-turbulence assumption in supersonic wall-bounded flows. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and momentum potential theory (MPT) are applied to investigate the interactions between the near-wall motions and the large-scale flow modes of the inner and outer layers.
