Abstract

This paper presents a rule-based methodology for smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs) integrated with distributed energy resources (DERs), addressing the dynamic needs of parking lot systems. With the proliferation of EVs and the corresponding need for efficient charging strategies, the proposed algorithm optimally manages charging operations at the connector level, considering the internal constraints of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) that feature multiple connectors. The methodology supports the system's operational limits and efficiently handles unexpected EV arrivals, ensuring robust and flexible charging solutions. In addition, the algorithm improves grid stability by preventing overloads through strategic power dispatch and managing connector activations based on real-time grid conditions and EV requirements. Based on usage profiles for typical weekdays and weekends, initial tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in maintaining EV charging commitment and energy efficiency without violating operational constraints. This study contributes to the evolving landscape of urban energy systems, emphasizing the critical role of smart charging infrastructures in achieving sustainable transportation solutions. (AU)
