Abstract

Orange peel waste presents a global environmental challenge and constitutes an underutilized source of valueadded compounds. In this context, this work optimized the extraction of phenolic compounds from orange peel by combining pulsed electric field (PEF) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), using water as a solvent. The influence of process variables such as electric field strength, number of pulses, ultrasound amplitude, and ultrasound pulse duration was quantified. The cell disintegration promoted by the application of PEF, along with UAE effects, increased total phenolic extraction yield by up to 119.9 %. Among the fifteen compounds identified by LC-MS, hesperidin was the major one. The optimum extraction conditions differed for each phenolic class identified (phenolic acids, flavones, flavanones, methoxy flavones, and limonoids). Overall, intermediate to high levels of PEF and ultrasound parameters favored extraction, highlighting this combined approach as a promising method for orange peel waste valorization and sustainable extraction of bioactive compounds.
