Abstract

Hisonotus piracanjuba, new species, is described from headwaters of the rio Paranaiba, upper rio Parana. The sharing of a pair of rostral plates in the anterior part of the snout, the supra-opercular plate receiving the laterosensory canal from the compound pterotic before the preopercle, and paired fenestrae in the anterior portion of the basipterygium, suggests a close phylogenetic relationship among H. insperatus, H. luteofrenatus and the new species.
