Abstract

This research effort intends to define the leading edge in the usage of Operations Research mathematical models by generalists (decision makers in real organizations), in collaboration with the Supply Chain Visual Analytics Lab from MIT. This means creating the prototype of an interactive environment where different options of logistics decision support systems with advanced visualization can be tested (big screen 4k multi-touch, virtual/augmented/mixed reality googles) for group and individual decision making. In order to perform the intended experiments, two cases of logistics network design will be made, in a way to obtain sufficiently realistic contexts to anchor rich discussions with both models and interface alternatives. Each will be set up in different extremes of the social perspective: one typical business logistics case (economics perspective), the another one a disaster response case (humanitarian perspective). It will be utilized an approach of multiple criteria optimization, which allows the explict consideration of tradeoffs between conflicting objectives and, therefore, greatly enrich the interactive context for group decison making. Additionally, the efficiency of human-assisted search of the multi-criteria decision space will be evaluated. Experiments and presentations will be performed both at MIT and USP, which will have a more austere test environment than that one at MIT. The final product is a first version of a visual interaction idiom between decision makers and optimization models. (AU)
