Abstract

Cancer is a complex disease, triggered by many factors, health systems and lifestyle, such as eating habits, smoking, sedentary lifestyle among others, and may be derived from genetic mutations inherent in each individual, becoming a Public health problem. Conventional treatments are aggressive and on several occasions with unsatisfactory prognosis, which may be related to clinical heterogeneity of tumors, among others, the need for improvement / development of new methods is evident. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an effective method for the treatment of various types of cancer by the use of a radiation for the activation of a photosensitizing agent (drug) in the presence of molecular oxygen. Unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy, PDT shows good results without cumulative toxicity, and can be used even in immunocompromised patients. In PDT, a radiation photosensitizing assay at an appropriate wavelength, results in a formation of reactive oxygen species, such as singlet oxygen, promoting cell death. Although this drug is selective, accumulating in less concentration in healthy cells, increased drug uptake into cells may help with the efficiency of PDT. Aiming at the need for new treatments for breast cancer, less invasive, and with collateral side effects, the present project proposes to evaluate the antitumor and toxicological action of PDT using bifunctional nanoprobes in an animal model. Thus, gold nanoparticles with active targeting, using the Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) protein and Chlorine e6 transporters, use in PDT as an alternative method of treatment against breast cancer.
