Abstract

3D Printing Technology has revolutionized the way we produce objects. From submicron features up to large houses, virtually anything can be produced by using this technology. In general, the 3D printing process follows the steps i) project of the object in computer assisted design software (CAD), ii) processing of the file by a slicer program and the generation of a G code, which the printer will read, and iii) production of the object and post-processing if necessary. Among the 3D printing techniques, the Digital Light Processing (DLP) has been successfully used to produce complex structures with micrometer resolution. In DLP, the controlled exposition of radiation over a tank containing photosensitive resin allows the polymerization of micrometer-thickness layers. By moving the tank on the Z axis the 3D object can be obtained. One advantage of DLP is the printing velocity, since the whole layer is polymerized at one exposition. Additionally, the instrumentation is simpler because moving parts required to control the beam of radiation (i.e., galvo-mirrors) are not necessary. This proposal involve the use of DLP on the direct 3D fabrication of microfluidic analytical devices (Lab on a Chip) aiming the application of the devices on bioanalysis and employing capillary electrophoresis in microchip format (MCE). We will evaluate new photo-resins formulations in order to prepare microdevices with suitable properties regarding wettability, hydrophilicity, surface charge and suitability for surface immobilization of molecules for the preparation of integrated sensors. Also, we plan to couple photometric, fluorescence, and electrochemical detectors to the fabricated microdevices. (AU)
