Abstract

The formation of monoalkyl carbonates (MACs) from carbon dioxide or bicarbonate and alcohols in aqueous medium has been shown in recent works. Among these MACs, those ones from aliphatic alcohols and sugars have been of particular interest. Many metabolites may be included in one of these classes, or they have part of their molecular structure whose reactivity is governed by such groups. Thus, there is an ongoing project (FAPESP 2012/06642-1) about the formation and the properties of MACs with possible biological roles. This new application intends to complement that study by enrolling a new researcher in the group, which will be the head of the development of microfluidic devices for kinetic studies about MACs. Different microfabrication technologies will be combined to produce devices allowing the handling of small volumes of solution containing enzymes and isotopically enriched substrates and introduction into de mass spectrometer through an electrospray ionization source.
