Abstract

The production of a bovine dense hydroxyapatite ceramic (HA) could be a promising polycrystalline biomaterial, to join the chemical advantages of HA and the need to produce as the minimum possible solid waste from bovine bones. The present research project is the synthesis of ideas from a group of interdisciplinary researchers and students from Bauru School of Dentistry (FOB/USP), Department of Physics of the School of Sciences (UNESP/Bauru), School of Engineering of São Carlos (EESC/USP), and The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS, USA. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of different percentages of TiO2 nanoparticles (0%, 5 or 8%) in the HA microstructure, by mechanical analyses: (1) flexural strength and reliability; (2) fracture toughness by hardness; (3) fracture toughness by surface crack in flexure (SCF); as well as by surface analyses - (4) odontoblasts human cells viability and mineralized matrix deposition; (5) chemical attraction to different locations on the materials' surface by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results from these tests will provide a mechanical and biological overview of this newest experimental material that it is expected to be used for dental applications. (AU)
