Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, epidemiological studies have shown that people with PD are more likely to die prematurely than those without PD, and an important PD-related category of death is sudden unexpected death in Parkinson's disease (SUDPAR). Additionally, the cause of SUDPAR is still unknown; however, the most commonly suggested mechanisms are cardiac abnormalities found in PD patients. Ideally, this article intends to illustrate the phenomenon of SUDPAR. Despite the need for translational studies, some risk factors have been related to SUDPAR, such as age of onset, duration of PD, gender, motor severity, concomitant cardiac and pulmonary disease, drug treatment (polypharmacy), and sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are present in more than 50% of patients with PD and cause impairment in patients' health and quality of life. In this sense, the objective of this study will be to evaluate several cardiac parameters (physiological, inflammatory and molecular) through sleep deprivation in a 6-hydroxydopamine-induced PD model.
