Effect of interval training on serum adipokine levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract

Background: with improved treatment and decreased mortality in the last decades, atherosclerotic vascular disease and its complications have been identified as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Studies have shown a correlation between adipokine levels and cardiovascular risk factors, with possible immunomodulatory role of these cytokines by mediating immune system, lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. Although it is established in the literature that SLE patients can benefit from regular physical exercise and that physical exercise modify the profile of some adipokines in some diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes and hypertension, there are no studies that have evaluated the effect of physical activity on adipokine serum levels in SLE patients. Objectives: To evaluate the serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, visfatin, resistin and chemerin according to the level of physical activity in patients with SLE. Secondary: correlate the levels of adipokines with body composition, including, body fat, lean mass index, fat mass and lean mass, muscle mass index adjusted by the body mass index (BMI); correlate adipokine levels with functional assessments associated card with cardiovascular risk. Patients and methods: cross-sectional study with 72 patients with SLE (SLICC criteria, 2012). Serum levels of leptin, visfatin, resistin, quemerine and adiponectin will be analyzed by Multiplex Luminex (R & D Systems, Minneapolis, MN, USA); body composition will be evaluated using the dual emission densitometer with lightning source X (Lunar Radiation Corporation, DPX model, Madison, WI, USA). SLE disease activity will be assessed by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) -ACR. Damage will be measured by The Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics / American College of Rheumatology Damage Index for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLICC / ACR-DI). Level of physical activity in the EG and GC will be assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Patients will complete a three-day food diary. In the exercise test, maximum and resting heart rate will be analyzed in the first, second and third minutes; chronotropic index and total METS will also be analysed. Patients will also perform 6-minute walk test, Time Up and Go, Sit and Stand and Handgrip strength. Patients will complete a three-day food diary. Statistical analysis: normality test, Student t test; non-parametric tests for data with non-normal distribution. Pearson or Spearman correlation. Values of p <0.05 will be considered significant.
