Abstract

Given the current challenges of power system operation, the objective of this research project is to contribute with the difficult problem of developing techniques for real time assessment of the dynamical security of electrical power systems. The increasing level of uncertainties in the operation of power systems, mainly due to the rapidly growing insertion of renewable and non-conventional sources of energy (which are highly intermittent, variable and non-controllable), makes the dynamic security assessment - which is currently run in the operation planning environment - insufficient to ensure a secure operation of modern power systems. Consequently, this research project aims at tackling the big challenge of developing and applying, in the real-time environment, tools for dynamic security assessment that are fast enough to alert and aid the operator in order to keep the system operating in a safe state, avoiding interruptions of energy supply and the occurrence of blackouts, even under conditions of operational uncertainties and considering the mentioned increasing penetration of renewable sources of energy. To cope with this challenging task, the goals of this proposal are divided into five main research topics: (i) design of dynamic security monitoring tools based on phasor measurement units (ii) incorporating wind power generation models in stability analysis and security assessment tools (iii) developing model-based tools for fast, real time screening of contingencies considering operational uncertainties (iv) developing tools for selection of preventive and corrective control and (v) integrating the developed methods of monitoring (based on phasor measurements) and security analysis (model-based methods) exploring their advantages and complementarities. With these studies and developments, we intend to provide, in real time, reliable stability margin information and preventive and corrective control suggestions to help the operator in keeping the power system operation in a safe state, avoiding interruption of power supply, even under operational uncertainties and considering the impacts of penetration of wind power generation in stability analysis of power systems.
