Evaluation of the salivary proteomic profile in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontitis

Abstract

Periodontitis is no longer considered a simple bacterial infection that leads to the destruction of periodontal tissues, it represents a complex interaction involving host inflammatory and immune systems, subgingival microbiota and modifying factors. Diabetes mellitus is one of the main risk factors for periodontitis and this relationship seems to be bidirectional, since periodontal treatment may contribute to glycemic control. Therefore, it is of great interest to monitor the risk of progression and early diagnosis of periodontal disease in this group of individuals. Saliva has been indicated as the main noninvasive material for diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases. Although some studies have linked some biomarkers to periodontal disease, within the complex inflammatory context of periodontal disease, which may be intensified with the presence of diabetes, it seems unlikely that focusing on only one protein is can be sufficient to provide a reliable biomarker for periodontal disease. In this context, the application of proteomics may allow a global analysis of proteins and has been considered a great promise capable of dissecting such complex immune-inflammatory interrelationships. Thus, the main objective of this study will be to compare the salivary protein profile in type 2 diabetic individuals with and without periodontitis and systemic health individuals with and without periodontitis.
