Abstract

Although there are standard methods for evaluating photoprotection (UVA and UVB), the damage chemoprevention mechanisms caused by ultraviolet radiation are not considered in these methods. Urocanic acid is a chromophore found in the skin and has been identified as an important immunosuppression mediator and carcinogenesis through its photoisomerization the trans form to the cis form induced by ultraviolet radiation. The development of a new method that explores the isomerization investigation it is necessary to elucidated possible mechanisms of protection. Although the sunscreens use is an important measure against sun damage, the elucidation of their effects in chemoprevention it is necessary. This project aims to develop and apply an ex vivo, non-invasive tape stripping methodology for the urocanic acid isomers' determination in the epidermis and to evaluate the penetration effect of these filters, as well as the protection against photoisomerization of urocanic acid after irradiation of UV light. In addition, the same procedure will be used to determine the antioxidant activity (antilipoperoxidative) of these sunscreens, and thus it is expected to map and elucidate the effects of photobiological protection of sunscreens of different absorption on the stratum corneum.
