Microencapsulation of mustard oil (Brassica sp.) for use as natural defensive in large-scale, organic and domestic agriculture - combined encapsulation techniques for prolonged action

Abstract

Traditional defensive companies have been intensively searching for new products with natural active ingredients, which are better accepted by the current market that seeks for products with lower environmental impact. The development of this research with the interaction of professionals from different areas of knowledge, Food Engineering, Microencapsulation, Chemistry of Natural Products, Agronomy and Entomology, aims to obtain a microencapsulated natural insecticide highly efficient, with low environmental impact and high economic potential. In this context, the objective of this work is to produce a natural agricultural and domestic defensive based on mustard oil, microencapsulated with combined techniques, in order to achieve prolonged effect after its application. Therefore, the mustard oil will be extracted and the natural defensive will be produced using two encapsulating systems. The first system will be formulated by the combination of a bilayer emulsion and a Pickering emulsion (EDC-EPI), whereas the second system will consist of a bilayer emulsion and microcapsules produced by spray drying of the Pickering emulsion (EDC-MSD). The release kinetics of the two systems will be evaluated in vitro at temperatures of 25 and 40 °C and relative humidities of 30 and 90%, to simulate some environmental conditions. The physicochemical properties of the emulsions and microcapsules will be evaluated by analysis of particle size distribution and morphology, and the results will be correlated with the release kinetics assays. In order to evaluate the applicability of the encapsulating systems, tests with insects will be carried out. The biological effect of the natural defensive will be evaluated by determination of lethal concentration (LC50) and dosage curve. The combined methods of microencapsulation are expected to result in microcapsules with distinct release triggers, with slow and prolonged mustard oil release. The two encapsulating systems will be compared in order to evaluate which of them will have the best relation between cost and benefit. With the result of this research it is expected that the new product will be responsible for 50% of "Linax Óleos Essenciais" revenues, with continuous growth similar or higher than the Brazilian natural defense market. The world market for these natural products has been presenting an annual growth of 15.3% and, in Brazil, the tendency is for it to grow between 15% and 20% in the next coming years. (AU)
