Abstract

Bioengineering has been working on the development of new biomaterials aimed at restoring an injured organism. In this line, bone grafts and cements applied in health areas could be used to reduce the osseointegration times. In general, bone cements are not used directly for the repair of fractures, but for the fixation of prostheses. Fractures are treated using implants/screws for internal anchorage. Current bone cements are manufactured using PMMA, which is an artificial, brittle and low mechanical resistance acrylic material. Another important aspect is the manipulation of the components to obtain the final product that is done manually and risks of contamination and variation of the mechanical properties can occur. - What is the proposal innovation? To develop a nanostructured bone cement of natural origin with Açai polyol, bioactive with hydroxyapatite and high mechanical resistance to treat bone fractures without implants/screws use. Another innovation will be the handling of the product that will be closed using new equipment (Phase 2). - Methodologies: Bone fractures treatment without implants/screws for internal stabilization is a technical challenge since this procedure is not used by the medical community. To evaluate the cement will be carried out "in vitro" and "in vivo" studies. A modular batch reactor for control of the inputs and polymerization controlling time, temperature, speed and pressure will be used. This reactor was developed and manufactured by the proponent and is in the final stages of testing. For the tests, adjustments and optimizations are required in the reactor structure. - Impacts of results:The research group has been developing new biomaterials using Acai polyol and hydroxyapatite. In these studies, the efficiency of the cement for fractures repair in the veterinary area was observed. The results should be proven with other combinations and tests to enable the new bone cement. Because they are domestic and easily accessible raw materials, material costs will be reduced. The relevant aspects of innovation are: - Non-use of implants to fracture repair or structural simplification of implants using smaller geometries and/or fewer screws to fixation. This will reduce costs with less traumatic surgery for the patient; - Modification of the resin manipulation process that will no longer be open and manual being controlled and closed (Phase 2)- Infrastructure and institutional support: The research will be carried out at the Biomaterials Laboratory (LABIOMEC / FEM / UNICAMP). There is also support from the Laboratory of Mechanical Projects / UFU and the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering / UFPA.- PIPE Project Planning - Phase 2: Phase 2 PIPE project will develop the Biomaterial Reaction Module (BRM). This new equipment will be designed to perform the process of mixing the components in a controlled way in time, components and temperature. The process will be performed in closed environment replacing the manual process done in the surgical environment. - Funding Sources and Company description: Bone cement has applications in the medical, dentistry and veterinary fields. There will be interest in hospitals, orthopedic clinics, research centers and companies in the sector. Market studies and search of partnerships with companies in the industry will be carried out to consolidate the proposal. Additional resources will be requested from other funding agencies. The bone cement to be developed was named "High-Napha Cimenx". This standardization was previously defined by the research group as "Napha System", that is, nanostructured, bioactive, ecologically correct biomaterials using biomaterials of vegetable origin.
